Periyar Jungle Patrol

The classic Periyar outing: forest-department and KTDC boats out over the drowned valley from the Thekkady landing, in fixed slots from early morning — the first slot is the wildlife slot. Wear the life jacket without argument; the 2009 Jalakanyaka capsize off Manakkavala is why the crews insist.

A full-day guided walk on the reserve’s boundary ridges — the most committing of the day programmes, small groups with trained tribal guides, current permits checked on the day and booked through the official portal, reporting at Thekkady.

The gentlest way into the forest proper: about three hours on interpretive trails away from the tourism-zone crowds, led by trained tribal trackers who read the ground — droppings, scrapes, birdcalls — rather than chase sightings.
