Alappuzha Beach
Beach · Alappuzha Town
History & overview
Alappuzha Beach is a popular Arabian Sea beach about 4 km from Alappuzha town, notable for its historic pier and the adjacent Alappuzha (Sea Bridge) Lighthouse. The pier, built by Captain Hugh Crawford around 1862, is over 150 years old and was used for loading and unloading ships until damaged by a cyclone in 1964. The Alappuzha Lighthouse (commissioned 28 March 1862) is one of the oldest on India's south-west coast, built of laterite and teak with a teakwood spiral staircase rising about 27 m.
