Neyyar Dam holds a reservoir at the edge of a protected Western Ghats landscape, where the dam visit and a sanctuary visit need separate planning.
The story of Neyyar Dam
The reservoir gives a clear starting point for the wider Neyyar basin. Kerala Tourism places the wildlife sanctuary around the Neyyar, Mullayar and Kallar catchments. From the visitor side of the dam you can understand how a river landscape becomes a managed waterbody and then protected forest upstream.
A dam-side outing may include a viewpoint or a managed boat trip when these are open. The current menu belongs to the operator and Forest Department, not to an old list of attractions. Ask about access, ticket counters and return timing before travelling from the city; do not assume a lion safari, crocodile centre or a particular boat type is running.
Keep the dam and sanctuary distinct. The public dam approach does not grant access to forest routes, and the Kottur elephant centre is a separate destination. Choose a daylight outing with enough time to return rather than trying to compress all three into one ticket.
