Highlights
- Reservoir and forest-edge landscape.
- Managed visitor routes where currently permitted.
- The wider protected basin beyond the tourist entrance.
Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary protects forest around the reservoir below Agasthyamala. A visit should centre on an authorised nature programme, with wildlife understood as habitat rather than a promised sighting.
Location: Neyyar Dam. Check the journey to this destination when choosing options in the Poovar base guide.

A protected Neyyar, Mullayar and Kallar basin established in 1958.
The dam-side visitor area is only one part of this larger sanctuary.
The Neyyar sanctuary extends far beyond the dam-side visitor area; a reservoir outing is an introduction to the protected landscape, not a promise of a wildlife sighting.
Kerala Tourism dates Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary to 1958 and places it across roughly 12,000 hectares of the Neyyar, Mullayar and Kallar basin. The dam-side entrance is only one way to meet this landscape. A boat view of forested shore, where operating, does not make the deeper sanctuary open for unguided walking.
The distinction matters when choosing an outing. Confirm current Forest Department access, permitted activities and the reporting point before travelling. A listing for a lion safari, crocodile facility or boat in old visitor copy does not establish that it is operating or appropriate to visit today.
Kottur’s elephant rehabilitation centre is another named destination in the wider Neyyar area. It has its own management and visit arrangements; do not treat it as an automatic stop on a dam ticket. Wildlife remains wild even when a visitor facility is open, so choose this outing for the reservoir and forest context rather than an animal checklist.
Kerala Tourism records the sanctuary’s establishment in 1958. Current visitor access should be checked against Forest Department instructions.

Plan a permitted visit around Neyyar’s reservoir and protected forest. Ask the Forest Department about the reporting point and programme operating on your date; this card does not establish a current lion safari or boating service.

Isola Di Cocco is a Poovar River resort with distinct tree-house, pool-villa, heritage and Ayurveda room types on its current site. Estuary Sarovar Premiere uses a Kulathoor Panchayat address beside the Poovar estuary. Compare its waterside setting and room category with the other four resort approaches, then use the Sarovar reservations contact to confirm the entrance, view, meals, transfer and full rate. A resort photograph does not establish your assigned room or included activities.
Poovar Island Resort at Pozhiyoor sells distinct land and floating cottage categories. Ask for the named cottage, any boat transfer, meal plan, current Ayurveda or activity booking, complete rate and cancellation terms. The pictured floating cottages show the property setting, not the cottage you will necessarily receive.
Over The Hill is a small Uchakada hilltop resort; its current operator page lists 12 rooms. The Kerala Tourism property image shows the pool above the coastal landscape. Ask which room and view are available, how to reach the road entrance, whether pool, dining or boat trips operate for your dates, and what the complete booking includes.
Club Mahindra Poovar lists hotel units, studios and one-bedroom accommodation, plus family activities and the Square Lagoon restaurant. Its official page supplies a map point but no street address or property-specific phone. Use that operator page to confirm booking eligibility, exact entrance, unit, included activities, meals, total cost and cancellation rules.
Jeeva Homestay is on the Kulathoor Road side of Poovar, with a direct host phone published on its site and matching Facebook and Instagram profiles. The property also advertises boating, but a room and boat trip are separate choices. Ask for the exact room, arrival pin, boat pickup, meals, total prices and cancellation terms before paying.

The Coral Nest Homestay is presented on its booking profile as a shared-home stay with a kitchen and a double-room option. It is listed in Kallumukku, Karumkulam, Puthiyathura P O, in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram district; the available evidence does not specify whether the kitchen or other spaces are private.

Book with the place itself. India’s cyber-crime coordination centre warned in April 2025 that convincing copies of hotel and pilgrimage booking sites are being pushed through sponsored search and social ads, taking payment for rooms the property never hears about. Use the contact and source details on each profile to confirm the exact business and booking channel. A directory entry or map pin alone does not establish an operator’s identity or current availability. Roampedia takes no commission and does not collect booking payments. If a booking page reached you through an ad, check the address bar against the property’s own site before you pay. Fraud can be reported on cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930.

Poovar’s backwater routes follow the Neyyar estuary past mangrove and a sandbar backed by the Arabian Sea. A small-boat trip is the clearest way to see how river and coast fit together.

Poovar Beach is the sandbar at the Neyyar River mouth, with backwater behind it and the Arabian Sea beyond. Its appeal is the coastal setting, reached as part of an arranged boat outing.

If you are travelling by bus or ferry, check the return service with the operator before setting out. Leave time to reach the stop or jetty after your visit.
Ask at the bus stand for the time of the last service back, not the next one. If you miss it, an auto or app cab is the fallback — agree the fare before you get in.
If you need step-free access, contact the site before travelling. Ask about a level entrance, steps along the route, the nearest drop-off point, seating and accessible toilets.
