Spend the cooler part of the day on the promenade and sand. If the lighthouse is part of your plan, check its visitor session first: the working tower has its own entrance and ticket, separate from the beach.

The story

The lighthouse gives the bay a clear point of reference. Its red-and-white bands rise above the southern headland, while the promenade follows the curve of the sand below. That combination explains why photographs of Kovalam so often show this particular cove.

The story of Lighthouse Beach

The beach is a place to linger over a walk or meal. Compare it with the shorter middle cove at Hawa and the quieter northern shore at Samudra before choosing where to spend your evening. They belong to the same Kovalam coast, but a beachfront address at one is not an address at all three.

History

The Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships dates the present Vizhinjam lighthouse to 1972. It is a working navigation aid as well as a visitor landmark.

What the cash actually costs
  • Withdrawing from a bank that is not your own is free for a set number of times a month, then costs up to ₹23 plus GST — about ₹27 a withdrawal. This is not one of the RBI’s six metro centres, so the allowance here is the higher one: at least five free other-bank withdrawals a month, and at least five at your own bank.
  • That free allowance belongs to Indian bank accounts. On a card issued abroad your own bank’s international withdrawal and exchange charges apply instead. If the machine offers to bill you in your home currency, choose rupees — the conversion rate on that offer is set by the machine, not by your bank.
  • Choose a well-lit ATM, preferably at a bank branch. Shield your PIN, avoid help from strangers and use your bank’s support number if a withdrawal fails or the machine retains your card.

Charge cap and free-transaction limits: Reserve Bank of India, in force since 1 May 2025.
