Highlights
- The red-and-white lighthouse above the southern cove.
- A seafront of cafés and shops.
- A vantage point for comparing Kovalam’s three named beaches.
Kovalam’s southern cove brings the striped Vizhinjam lighthouse, a busy promenade and a long seaside evening into one view. Lighthouse Beach suits visitors who want cafés and coastal scenery close together.

The southern Kovalam cove is named for Vizhinjam Lighthouse, commissioned in 1972 after the resort story had begun.
A beach walk and a lighthouse climb are separate visits; check present lighthouse access and sea warnings.
Lighthouse Beach takes its name from a navigational tower younger than Kovalam’s first wave of visitors. That small reversal is a useful way into the cove’s changing identity.
Kerala Tourism describes Kovalam as three named coves, with Lighthouse Beach at the southern end. The red-and-white Vizhinjam Lighthouse stands above this beach on Kurumkal hill. The Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships records a day mark here in 1960 and the present light’s commissioning on 20 May 1972. Kovalam’s traveller story had already begun; the tower became the landmark that later defined the beach in photographs and directions.
The seaside walk is the busy part of this cove: cafés and shops face the sand, and the lighthouse offers a different perspective when public visiting is open. Its official name is Vizhinjam Lighthouse, even though visitors often call it the Kovalam lighthouse. A lighthouse visit and a beach visit are separate plans; check current admission and hours before relying on the climb.
This is an active coast, not a swimming pool. Kerala Tourism’s broad description of “safe swimming” cannot establish today’s currents, flags or lifeguard cover. Read the on-site warnings each day, keep away from the water when it is rough, and ask locally before entering the sea.
The light authority records the 1960 day mark, 1972 commissioning and later equipment changes. These are better anchors for the beach name than repeated claims that the tower was already operating in the 1960s.
Kerala Tourism places Kovalam on the 1970s traveller trail. The cove’s tourism history and its working shoreline overlap, but neither makes a daily fishing scene or fixed visitor activity certain.
Use the striped tower as a way to understand the shape of Kovalam’s southern cove.
Walk the public seafront and compare its more developed setting with Hawa and Samudra, using road access if a rocky shore crossing is closed.
Check the light authority’s current visitor notice before planning the climb.

Sagara’s Multi-Cuisine Restaurant is a named dining venue within Sagara Beach Resort above Lighthouse Beach. The operator lists Kerala, Indian, Chinese, Thai and Continental dishes; its own Instagram dining post shows the resort’s sunset meal setting. Choose it for a broader menu and sea-facing resort setting, then ask whether non-residents can book a table. Confirm the current menu, price, service hours and exact resort entrance directly; a photographed meal is not a promise of a specific table or sunset view.
Naivedya is Rockholm’s sea-facing restaurant on Lighthouse Road. The operator describes a changing, predominantly vegetarian set menu planned around its Ayurveda programmes, so it serves a different dining need from a beach café or an à la carte seafood stop. The published terrace photograph shows the venue in 2022; ask about its current layout. Before travelling, call the front office to check whether non-residents can reserve, what the current set menu costs and how allergies or dietary needs are handled.
Book with the place itself. India’s cyber-crime coordination centre warned in April 2025 that convincing copies of hotel and pilgrimage booking sites are being pushed through sponsored search and social ads, taking payment for rooms the property never hears about. Use the contact and source details on each profile to confirm the exact business and booking channel. A directory entry or map pin alone does not establish an operator’s identity or current availability. Roampedia takes no commission and does not collect booking payments. If a booking page reached you through an ad, check the address bar against the property’s own site before you pay. Fraud can be reported on cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930.
