The story of Thiruvananthapuram Zoo

Walk in through the gate off the Museum Park and the first thing that registers is not an animal but the canopy. The zoo was laid out as a woodland garden in the middle of the nineteenth century, and the trees planted then are now enormous — buttressed, epiphyte-hung, dropping shade across the paths in a way no modern facility could manufacture. On a hot Thiruvananthapuram afternoon the temperature difference between the pavement outside and the middle of the grounds is immediately noticeable.

This botanical origin is the zoo's defining characteristic and the reason it feels unlike anywhere else of its kind in India. It was established under Travancore in the 1850s, in the same wave of princely institution-building that produced the museum next door, and it was designed as a public pleasure ground — lawns, a lake, specimen trees — into which an animal collection was placed. Many of the mature trees are labelled, and for a certain kind of visitor they are the better half of the visit.

The lake is the other legacy of that layout. It sits low in the grounds, catching reflections of the old trees, and the paths curve around it rather than cutting across — the logic of a garden walk rather than an exhibition circuit. Water birds use it freely and are not part of any collection.

The animal collection covers the usual South Indian range, with the Asian elephant, big cats, primates and reptiles among the residents, and it should be said plainly that a nineteenth-century layout is not a twentieth-century one: the grounds are magnificent and some enclosures are older than modern standards would build. Visitors who care about that will notice it, and it is fairer to say so than to pretend the whole site is uniformly modern.

Practically, the zoo shares its walled compound with the Napier Museum and the Sree Chitra Art Gallery, but not its ticket — each is charged separately, at its own entrance. Most people treat the compound as a single outing and buy two or three. Come at opening time: the animals move in the cool of the morning, the light under the trees is at its best, and the school parties have not yet arrived. And note the closure — Mondays, plus certain public holidays.

History

The zoo was established under Travancore in the 1850s, with 1857 the date usually given, making it one of the oldest zoological collections in India and one of the oldest in Asia. It was created as part of the same programme of public institutions that founded the museum in the adjoining grounds two years earlier, in 1855.

From the outset it was conceived as a botanical garden as much as a menagerie, laid out across roughly 55 acres with a lake, lawns and planted specimen trees. That original planting is why the grounds now carry mature timber of a size that cannot be created quickly.

The wider compound accumulated institutions around it: the present Napier Museum building opened in 1880, and in 1935 the Sree Chitra Art Gallery was inaugurated under Maharaja Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma. Together the three form the Museum Park precinct on the city's northern high ground.

After Independence the zoo passed into state administration, and it continues to operate as a public zoological park under the Government of Kerala.
