- A wide city-shore view whose accessible edge changes with coastal works.
Shanghumukham is Thiruvananthapuram’s evening shoreline: an open sea horizon, airport-side access and Kanayi Kunhiraman’s reclining mermaid sculpture. Come for a coastal walk and the changing light.

A public beach by Thiruvananthapuram airport, known for the Arattu Mandapam and Kanayi Kunhiraman’s Jalakanyaka sculpture.
The shore also hosts Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple’s sea-bath procession. Erosion and protection work can change which stretches are open; check access on arrival.
Shanghumukham is a city beach with three stories in one view: a temple’s ritual landing, an airport runway crossing the procession route, and a monumental mermaid looking toward the sky.
The stone Arattu Mandapam on the shore belongs to the ritual geography of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Kerala Tourism describes the procession of the deities from East Fort to Shanghumukham for their sea bath. The beach is therefore a public promenade and a ceremonial destination, with different uses on ordinary evenings and festival days.
The route crosses Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. The airport operator says it issues a notice and halts flights for the procession twice a year. That is a remarkable meeting of a living ritual and modern infrastructure, but it is not a daily spectacle or a reason to enter airport grounds outside the organised event.
Kanayi Kunhiraman’s Jalakanyaka, also called Sagarakanyaka, is another landmark. Guinness World Records identifies it as the largest merperson sculpture and gives its dimensions as 26.5 metres long and 7.6 metres high. Guinness records the artist’s idea of a mermaid seeking refuge from a polluted sea and discovering that land too needs help. The work carries an environmental question as well as a striking silhouette.
Kerala’s Economic Review names Shanghumukham among the state’s coastal erosion hotspots selected for site-specific study. That supports concern about a changing shoreline; it does not support a precise annual retreat rate at every point of this beach.
The airport operator dates the airport to 1932 and says its runway was planned to preserve the older ceremonial route. Current flight suspensions are announced for the specific festival dates, not on a fixed visitor timetable.
See the Arattu Mandapam, the shoreline and the mermaid sculpture as different parts of the same public space.
For a ceremony, check the temple and airport’s current festival notices and keep the procession route clear.

Book with the place itself. India’s cyber-crime coordination centre warned in April 2025 that convincing copies of hotel and pilgrimage booking sites are being pushed through sponsored search and social ads, taking payment for rooms the property never hears about. Use the contact and source details on each profile to confirm the exact business and booking channel. A directory entry or map pin alone does not establish an operator’s identity or current availability. Roampedia takes no commission and does not collect booking payments. If a booking page reached you through an ad, check the address bar against the property’s own site before you pay. Fraud can be reported on cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930.
