Lakkam Waterfalls, Munnar
Know before you go. This is in the Munnar high range, where heavy south-west monsoon rain (roughly June–September) has caused deadly landslides — including the 2020 Pettimudi disaster near Rajamala — and can block or damage the ghat roads at short notice. Check current road, weather and access conditions with the district administration or Kerala State Disaster Management Authority before you travel, especially in the monsoon.

Lakkam Waterfalls belongs under Munnar, one of the practical travel bases in Idukki district. Use Munnar for stays, food, local transport and operators, then plan this place as a focused stop rather than an isolated pin.

The story

On the wild, winding Munnar–Marayoor–Udumalpet road, where the tea country begins to surrender to grassland and sandalwood forest, a curtain of cold water spills over dark rock into a wooded gorge. This is Lakkam Waterfalls — also spelt Lakkom — a forest-department cascade fed by the Eravikulam stream, one of the freshest, least-crowded stops on the high road out of Munnar.

The story of Lakkam Waterfalls

Most travellers meet Lakkam almost by accident. You leave Munnar climbing north, the tea estates fall away behind you, and somewhere between Rajamalai and Marayoor the road bends past a modest forest-department gate. A short walk down a stepped, tree-shaded path — ten minutes or so — and the sound arrives before the sight: a steady rush of water tumbling over rock into a shaded pool below.

The falls drop something on the order of fifteen metres — sources tend to say over fifty feet, though nobody seems to measure it precisely — and spread across a broad face of stone rather than plunging in a single thread. In good flow the water fans out white and cold, throwing spray across the ferns and the mossy boulders that crowd the gorge. It is a wide, generous sort of waterfall, more curtain than spout.

What makes Lakkam special is the water itself. It is genuinely cold, mineral-clear, and it comes straight down from the high shola grasslands of the Eravikulam plateau above Munnar. The forest department has built a small bathing area at the base, with steps and a railed pool, so visitors can wade and splash in the shallows under the spray — one of the few places on this stretch where you are actively invited to get into the water.

The setting is the other draw. Lakkam sits deep in wooded country on the edge of the Eravikulam–Chinnar landscape, and the walk down feels like slipping briefly into the forest proper. Birdsong, dappled light, the smell of wet leaf litter — it is a green, quiet pocket, a long way in spirit from the busy viewpoints closer to Munnar town.

Because it lies on the route to Marayoor and the Tamil Nadu border, Lakkam works beautifully as a break in a longer day. Travellers heading up to the sandalwood forests, the ancient dolmens and the sugarcane jaggery country of Marayoor often pause here to stretch their legs, dip their feet and eat a packed lunch before pressing on. It rewards the unhurried far more than the rushed.

It is not a manicured attraction, and that is the point. There is a ticket counter, a few steps and a railing, and beyond that the forest does the work. Come in the right season, with a change of clothes and a little patience for the short climb back up, and Lakkam gives you the rarest thing on the Munnar circuit — a cold, clean, uncrowded waterfall you can actually stand under.

History

Lakkam Waterfalls owes its existence entirely to the high country above it. The falls are fed by the Eravikulam stream, which rises in the core zone of Eravikulam National Park — the same rolling shola-grassland plateau that shelters the Nilgiri tahr and crowns the Munnar highlands. That stream is counted among the major tributaries of the Pambar, one of the few east-flowing rivers of Kerala, which eventually crosses into Tamil Nadu to join the Cauvery system.

For most of its history this was simply forest — remote, thickly wooded country on the old track between the Munnar tea belt and the plains around Udumalpet and Marayoor. The route that now carries visitors past the falls, today numbered as a state highway running Munnar–Marayoor–Udumalpet, is the same corridor that long linked the hill estates to the Tamil Nadu lowlands, threading through some of the driest and most unusual forest in the district.

The waterfall lies within land managed by the Kerala Forest Department, on the fringe of the Eravikulam and Chinnar protected landscape. Rather than leave it as an informal roadside stop, the department developed a small regulated visitor area — a ticket counter, a stepped path down from the road, and a railed bathing pool at the base — so that people could enjoy the water without damaging the surrounding forest. Access is controlled by daytime timings and a modest entry ticket.

That protected status is why Lakkam has stayed relatively wild while other spots around Munnar grew crowded and commercial. There are no big resorts crowding the gorge and no sprawling market at the gate; the forest frame is deliberately kept intact. The falls remain a low-key, department-run natural attraction rather than a built-up tourist complex.

In recent years Lakkam has steadily earned a place on the standard Munnar–Marayoor itinerary, valued precisely for what it is not: not a viewpoint you photograph from a railing, but a cold forest pool you can step into, on a road that carries you onward into the sandalwood country and dolmen sites of Marayoor beyond.

Why visit

You can actually get in the water. Unlike the many look-but-do-not-touch viewpoints around Munnar, Lakkam has a forest-department bathing area at the base of the falls where you can wade and splash in the cold, clear shallows.

The water is genuinely special — cold, mineral-clear and fed straight from the shola grasslands of Eravikulam National Park high above, rather than from farmland or town.

It is refreshingly uncrowded. Sitting well out of Munnar town on the road to Marayoor, Lakkam sees far fewer visitors than the marquee spots, so the setting stays quiet and green.

The short walk down through wooded country is a small adventure in itself — a stepped, tree-shaded path that drops you into a shaded gorge full of ferns, boulders and birdsong.

It slots perfectly into a bigger day out. Because it is on the Munnar–Marayoor–Udumalpet road, it pairs naturally with the sandalwood forests, ancient dolmens and jaggery villages of Marayoor and the Chinnar landscape.

It is a broad, scenic curtain of a waterfall rather than a thin trickle, so in the right season — post-monsoon into the early months of the year — the flow is full, cold and genuinely photogenic.

Lakkam Waterfalls — at a glance

TimingsOpen daily, generally around 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (indicative — confirm locally); as a forest-department site the gate and ticket counter keep daytime hours and last entry may be earlier.
Best timePost-monsoon, roughly October to January, is the sweet spot for full, clear flow, with good water often lasting into around March; avoid the peak of heavy monsoon when the falls can be dangerously strong, and expect a thinner flow in the driest months.

Entry: A small forest-department ticket per person — reported figures range from about ₹10 to ₹50 (indicative — confirm locally). DSLR/still cameras are generally allowed without a separate charge, and a guided trek alongside the falls may cost extra (indicative — confirm locally).

Festivals: No temple festival is associated with the falls; the natural calendar is what matters, with the post-monsoon high-water months (indicative — confirm locally) drawing the most visitors.

Photography: Very photogenic — a wide curtain of water framed by dark rock and forest. Still cameras are usually fine without an extra fee (indicative — confirm locally); protect gear from spray, and mind slippery footing when composing shots near the pool.

Getting here

How to reach Lakkam Waterfalls

  • ✈︎ By air The nearest airports are Cochin International Airport (Nedumbassery), roughly a 4–5 hour drive away via Munnar, and Coimbatore Airport on the Tamil Nadu side, both requiring an onward taxi (indicative — confirm locally).
  • 🚆︎ By train The closest convenient railhead for the Kerala side is Aluva (near Kochi), while Udumalpet/Pollachi and Coimbatore serve the Tamil Nadu approach; all are a long onward drive by taxi or bus (indicative — confirm locally).
  • 🚗︎ By road The falls sit directly on the Munnar–Marayoor–Udumalpet road (State Highway 17), roughly 20–25 km north of Munnar — allow for the winding hill route as some sources quote longer — and only a short distance before Marayoor.
  • 🚌︎ By bus Buses running from Munnar towards Marayoor and Udumalpet pass the site and can drop you at the falls; services are limited on this hill road, so check timings both ways and keep return options in mind (indicative — confirm locally).
Getting back

Work out your return before you settle in for the sunset. Services on this coast thin out sharply in the evening, and Lakkam Waterfalls is easier to reach than to leave. We do not publish departure times: there is no official live feed we are permitted to republish, and a wrong time here would strand you. Check the operator directly on the day.

Ask at the jetty or stand for the time of the last service back, not the next one. If you miss it, an auto or app cab is the fallback — agree the fare before you get in.

Do

Things to do

  • Walk the short stepped forest path down from the road to the base of the falls.
  • Wade and cool off in the forest-department bathing pool in the cold, clear shallows.
  • Photograph the broad cascade and the fern-and-boulder gorge that frames it.
  • Take the optional guided trek alongside the waterfall if it is being offered that day.
  • Pause for a packed picnic in the shaded, wooded setting off the Marayoor road.
  • Combine the stop with Marayoor’s sandalwood forests, ancient dolmens and jaggery villages further along the road.
  • Watch for birds and forest life in the surrounding shola-edge woodland.

This is a Kerala Forest Department site with regulated daytime timings and an entry ticket — check current hours and fees at the counter, as they change. The rocks are slippery and the pool is for wading, not deep swimming; keep within the railed area, watch children closely, and never enter the water during or just after heavy monsoon rain, when the flow can turn dangerous. The walk back up is a short climb.

Getting around Lakkam Waterfalls

We have not assessed physical access at this place yet. Across India, step-free routes, handrails and accessible toilets are the exception rather than the rule, and pavements are often interrupted — if step-free access matters to you, contact the site or a local operator before committing to the trip.

Where Lakkam Waterfalls is

Good to know

Lakkam Waterfalls — frequently asked

Where exactly is Lakkam Waterfalls?

It lies on the Munnar–Marayoor–Udumalpet road in Idukki district, between the Rajamalai area and Marayoor, roughly 20–25 km north of Munnar town (some sources quote up to around 40 km, so allow for the winding route) and only a kilometre or two short of Marayoor. It sits on the edge of the Eravikulam–Chinnar forest landscape.

Can you swim or bathe at Lakkam Waterfalls?

Yes — the forest department maintains a small railed bathing area and pool at the base of the falls where visitors can wade and play in the cold shallows. It is not a deep swimming spot, the rocks are slippery, and you should stay within the marked area and never venture close during heavy monsoon flow.

How tall is the waterfall?

Reported heights vary; most sources describe it as a broad cascade of over fifty feet — roughly fifteen metres or so — falling across a wide face of rock rather than in a single narrow plunge. Treat the exact figure as approximate.

How long does it take to reach the falls from the road?

A short stepped path leads down from the roadside gate to the falls, taking around ten minutes on foot. The climb back up is the harder half, so allow a little extra time and take it steadily if you are with children or older travellers.

What is the best time of year to visit?

The post-monsoon months from roughly October into January are generally considered the finest, when the water is full and clear, with good flow often continuing into around March. During and immediately after heavy rain the flow can turn dangerously strong, and by peak dry season it thins.

Does it cost anything to enter?

Yes, there is a modest forest-department entry ticket per person, and a separate guided trek option is sometimes offered for a small extra charge (indicative — confirm locally). Fees and timings are set by the department and can change, so check at the counter on arrival.

When is the best time to visit Lakkam Waterfalls?

Post-monsoon is usually strongest; dry months are easier for access but water volume may be lower.

What are the entry fee and timings at Lakkam Waterfalls?

Entry: A small forest-department ticket per person — reported figures range from about ₹10 to ₹50 (indicative — confirm locally). DSLR/still cameras are generally allowed without a separate charge, and a guided trek alongside the falls may cost extra (indicative — confirm locally).. Timings: Open daily, generally around 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (indicative — confirm locally); as a forest-department site the gate and ticket counter keep daytime hours and last entry may be earlier.. Fees and timings are indicative — confirm on site before you travel.

How do I reach Lakkam Waterfalls?

Base yourself in Munnar or a nearby town in Idukki, then confirm the last-mile route locally before leaving. Visit early and check whether the falls are open; waterfall access can close quickly in heavy rain. If the visit depends on forest, temple, boat, ferry, weather or seasonal access, check the official/local rule on the day before travel.

How much time do I need for Lakkam Waterfalls?

1 to 3 hours.

What else is near Lakkam Waterfalls?

Nearby you can pair Kanthalloor (5.3 km), Anamudi Shola (6.4 km), Kundala Lake (6.6 km), Meesapulimala trek (7.1 km).

What should I know before visiting Lakkam Waterfalls?

Do not enter restricted pools or climb wet rocks. Flash-flood risk rises during heavy rain.
